Power Quality Matters: G59 Projects’ Training Visit to Fortop

As the UK’s energy landscape continues to evolve, power quality is becoming a growing concern across commercial, industrial, and renewable installations.

At G59 Projects, we’re heavily involved with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) across the country. Increasingly, we’re seeing clients face challenges linked to power quality issues, particularly harmonics and their impact on system performance and compliance.

To stay ahead of these challenges, our team recently travelled to the Netherlands to undertake specialist training with industry leaders, Fortop automation & energy control and Fortop UK Automation & Energy Control, focusing on power quality monitoring, analysis, and mitigation.

What Are Power Quality Issues – and Why Do They Matter?

Power quality refers to the stability and reliability of electrical power within a system. When issues arise, they can lead to:

  • Equipment malfunction or failure

  • Reduced efficiency and increased energy costs

  • Compliance issues with DNO requirements

  • Project delays or even infeasibility

One of the most common and disruptive issues we’re seeing is harmonics — distortions in the electrical waveform caused by modern electrical loads such as inverters, EV chargers, and industrial equipment.

Why We Invested in Advanced Power Quality Training

Our visit to Fortop was centred around one key objective:

To better understand, monitor, and solve power quality challenges for our clients.

The training provided valuable insights into:

  • Identifying and diagnosing power quality issues

  • Monitoring electrical systems effectively

  • Understanding harmonic distortion and its impact

  • Implementing solutions to improve system performance

Most importantly, it reinforced a critical principle:

Prevention is always better than cure.

By identifying potential issues early, we can help clients avoid costly redesigns, delays, or compliance failures.

Turning Unfeasible Projects into Feasible Solutions

One of the most exciting takeaways from the training is the ability to unlock projects that may have previously been considered unfeasible.

With the right monitoring and mitigation strategies in place, we can:

  • Reduce harmonic distortion

  • Improve grid compliance

  • Optimise system performance

  • Enable projects to move forward where they otherwise couldn’t

This is particularly important in the renewable sector, where grid constraints and compliance requirements are becoming more stringent.

Why Power Quality Monitoring Should Be a Priority

The reality is simple – Any site using power can benefit from power quality monitoring.

Whether it’s a solar PV installation, commercial facility, or industrial operation, understanding how power behaves within a system is key to:

  • Maintaining performance

  • Ensuring compliance

  • Protecting equipment

  • Reducing long-term costs

What’s Next for G59 Projects?

Following this training, we’re excited to be working on a new power quality monitoring solution, designed to give our clients greater visibility and control over their electrical systems.

More details will be coming soon…

Finally, a huge thank you to Fortop automation & energy control and Fortop UK Automation & Energy Control for their support and hospitality.
